What is GEICO?
The Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO) founded in 1936 by Leo Goodwin Sr. and his wife Lillian Goodwin to provide auto insurance directly to federal government employees and their families. It is an American auto insurance company mainly located in Maryland (USA). After State Farm, it is honored to be the second-largest auto insurer in the United States. GEICO is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway which covers, as of 2017, more than 24 million motor vehicles owned by more than 15 million customers or policyholders. Since 1925, Goodwin had worked for USAA as an insurer who specialized in insuring only military personnel.

GEICO gives private passenger automobile insurance in each 50 US states and the District of Columbia. GEICO sells policies through local agents, who are called 'GEICO Field Representatives', via the phone directly to the consumer through licensed insurance agents, and via their website. Its symbol is a gold dust day gecko with a Cockney accent, voiced over by English actor Jake Wood. GEICO is also well known in popular culture for its advertising, having made numerous commercials intended to entertain the audience.



GEICO also offers Property insurance with umbrella coverage and third parties collaboration and manages the policies as the “insurance agent”, means, the risk of policies is transferred to third party companies. But it has a separate customer care team that handles the property and umbrella policies.

Since the word "government" is added in its name, GEICO has always been a private corporation not affiliated with any 
U.S. government organization.
