When you upgrade your PC's operating system like windows 8.1 to windows 10, then the old version in your PC doesn't completely remove. It sits down on your hard drive like an unwanted guest and uses hard drive space, memory and RAM. It sits in a system folder called windows.old. In this article, I'm gonna show you complete step by step that how easily you can erase windows old folder from your windows 10 operating system.
No matter in which device you operate your windows. It's a desktop computer or it's a laptop. The theory is the same.
Turn on your computer. When Windows finishes loading and is ready to work, do the step by step process given below.
#Click on My computer and then click on C Drive.
#There is a folder called 'Windows.old'. It's occupying almost 17 GB of space if you right-click on it and watch its properties.
#If you try to remove it by deleting it, It doesn't get removed and asks for administrator permission to get erased from the system.
#Right click on the folder and open 'Properties' dialogue box. It will take 4-5 minutes to load the folder's size.
#Click on the 'Security' button.
#Click on the 'Change' icon (Next to the 'System' button).
#Click on Advanced Button located down in the box.
#Click on the 'Find Now' button.
#Locate "Users" in the list and select it and then click the 'OK' button.
#Click the 'OK' button on the next box.
#Check marks both boxes (upside and downside) and then click the 'Apply' button.
#Click the 'Yes' button.
#Click the "OK" button several times.
#In the Windows.old properties box, select Security and click on the "Users" option. A pop up will appear and again select 'Users' option and checkmark all "Allow" options and click on the "Apply" button.
#Now you can delete the 'windows.old' folder without any problem because you've got the ownership rights after doing the above step by steps stuff.
Thus, you've freed up to 20 GB space in your Operating System 'Drive C'. It will boost the performance of your PC or Laptop and also you'll get additional space to install more Applications or Games or Both.
