In 180 AD, Hispano-Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius means to get back to his home after he drives the Roman armed force to triumph against the Germanic clans close to Vindobona on the Limes Germanicus. Sovereign Marcus Aurelius lets Maximus know that his own child, Commodus, is unsuitable to decide and that he wishes Maximus to succeed him, as official, to assist with saving Rome from defilement and reestablish the Roman Republic. After hearing this, Commodus murders his dad.

Commodus announces himself the new ruler and asks Maximus for his dependability, yet Maximus denies. Maximus is captured by the Praetorian Guard and is informed that he and his family will bite the dust. He kills his capturers and rides for a month's time from Germania, close to introduce day Vienna, at Vindobona, for his home close to Trujillo, where he observes his bequest annihilated and his family executed. Maximus covers his better half and child, then, at that point, falls from his wounds. He is found by slave masters who take him to the city of Zucchabar, across the Pillars of Hercules, in the Roman area of Mauretania Caesariensis, where he is offered to a combatant mentor named Proximo.

Albeit hesitant, Maximus battles in neighborhood competitions and becomes friends with two different combatants: Juba, a Numidian; and Hagen, a German. His tactical abilities assist him with winning matches and gain acknowledgment from different fighters and the group. Proximo uncovers that he was once a fighter who was liberated by Marcus Aurelius, and prompts Maximus that he should "win the group" to win his opportunity. At the point when Commodus coordinates 150 days of games, Proximo takes his combatants to battle in Rome's Colosseum.

Camouflaged by a veiled head protector, Maximus debuts in gladiatorial battle in the Colosseum as a Carthaginian in a re-authorization of the Battle of Zama. Out of the blue, Maximus drives his side to triumph, and Commodus enters the Colosseum to offer his congrats. He arranges the hidden Maximus, as head of the fighters, to show himself and give his name; Maximus uncovers himself and announces retaliation. Commodus is constrained by the group to allow the fighters to live, and his gatekeepers are kept away from striking them down.

Maximus' next battle is against an amazing undefeated warrior named Tigris of Gaul. Commodus has set up for a very long time to be set upon Maximus during the duel; Maximus, in any case, wins. Commodus orders Maximus to kill Tigris, however Maximus saves his adversary's life; he is classified "Maximus the Merciful" by the group. Maddened at this result, Commodus insults Maximus about his family's demises, yet Maximus dismisses and strolls.

Maximus finds from Cicero, his ex-organized, that his previous armies stay steadfast. Lucilla, Commodus' sister; Gracchus, a persuasive representative; and Maximus meet furtively. Maximus will get away from Rome, join his troopers, bring down Commodus forcibly, and hand power back to the Roman Senate. Commodus learns of the plot when Lucilla's child, Lucius, honestly indicates the trick. Commodus undermines Lucilla and Lucius, and has the Praetorian Guard capture Gracchus and assault the combatants' sleeping shelter. Proximo and his men, including Hagen, penance themselves to empower Maximus to get away. Maximus is caught at the meeting with Cicero, where the last option is killed.

With an end goal to win back individuals' endorsement, Commodus provokes Maximus to a duel in the Colosseum. He cuts Maximus before the match to acquire a benefit. In spite of his wounds, Maximus incapacitates Commodus, whom the Praetorian Guard will not help. Commodus then, at that point, delivers a secret blade, which Maximus crashes into Commodus' throat, killing him. Maximus surrenders to his injuries. Before he passes on, he requests political changes, for his fighter partners to be liberated, and for Senator Gracchus to be restored. Maximus' companions and partners honor him as "a fighter of Rome", at Lucilla's command, and complete his body of the field, leaving the dead Commodus behind.

Juba visits the Colosseum around evening time and covers the dolls of Maximus' significant other and child at where he passed on. Juba vows to see Maximus once more, "however not yet".
