Whais is Cornell Supplemental Essays and How to Write it

 Cornell University often requires applicants to submit supplemental essays in addition to the main Common Application essay. While the specific prompts may vary from year to year, as of my last knowledge update in January 2022, here are some examples of Cornell supplemental essay prompts that have been used in the past:

Example 1: College of Arts and Sciences

Prompt: "Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences is the most general of Cornell’s seven undergraduate colleges. Please respond to the essay question below (maximum of 650 words) that corresponds to the undergraduate college(s) to which you are applying."

Essay Prompt: "Students in Arts and Sciences embrace the opportunity to delve into their academic interests, discover new realms of intellectual inquiry, and chart their own path through the College. Tell us why the depth, breadth, and flexibility of our curriculum are ideally suited to exploring the areas of study that excite you."

Example 2: College of Engineering

Prompt: "Cornell Engineering celebrates innovative problem-solving that helps people, communities... the world. Consider your ideas and aspirations and describe how a Cornell Engineering education would allow you to leverage technological problem-solving to improve the world we live in."

Essay Prompt: "Tell us about an engineering idea you have, or about your interest in engineering. Describe how your ideas and interests may be realized by—and linked to—specific resources within the College of Engineering. Finally, explain what a Cornell Engineering education will enable you to accomplish."

Example 3: School of Hotel Administration

Prompt: "The global hospitality industry includes hotel and foodservice management, real estate, finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, technology, and law. Describe what has influenced your decision to study business through the lens of hospitality. What personal qualities make you a good fit for SHA?"

Essay Prompt: "Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration is the hub of the hospitality industry. Please describe how your personal interests and professional goals make you a future leader in the hospitality industry and how the School of Hotel Administration will help you achieve your career goals."

Tips for Approaching Cornell Supplemental Essays:

  1. Research the College or School: Understand the unique qualities of the specific college or school at Cornell to which you are applying. Tailor your response to demonstrate how your interests align with the offerings of that particular academic unit.

  2. Show Your Fit: Clearly articulate why Cornell, in general, and the specific college or school, in particular, is the right fit for your academic and personal aspirations. Show that you've researched and understand what Cornell has to offer.

  3. Be Specific: Use concrete examples and details to illustrate your points. If you mention resources, programs, or faculty members, be sure to explain how they align with your goals.

  4. Demonstrate Passion: Whether discussing your academic interests or career goals, convey genuine enthusiasm. Help the admissions committee understand why you are not just a good fit but an enthusiastic and engaged prospective student.
