How to Cook Brown Rice (Step by Step)

Brown rice is a nutritious and delicious grain that is packed with fiber, protein, and other essential nutrients. It is a great alternative to white rice and can be used in a variety of dishes. Here's how to cook brown rice:

Ingredients:

1 cup brown rice

2 cups water or broth

Salt to taste

Instructions:

Rinse the brown rice thoroughly in a fine-mesh strainer.

In a medium saucepan, combine the brown rice, water or broth, and salt.

Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid.

Simmer the brown rice for about 45-50 minutes, or until the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender.

Turn off the heat and let the brown rice sit for 5-10 minutes with the lid still on to absorb any remaining liquid.

Fluff the brown rice with a fork before serving.

Optional:

To add flavor, you can replace some of the water or broth with coconut milk or vegetable broth.

You can also add seasonings like herbs, spices, or citrus juice to the cooking liquid for extra flavor.

To make brown rice more tender, you can soak it in water for a few hours before cooking.

Brown rice can also be cooked in a rice cooker or an Instant Pot. Here are the steps for each method:

Rice cooker:

Rinse the brown rice thoroughly and add it to the rice cooker.

Add the water or broth and salt.

Turn on the rice cooker and let it cook until the brown rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.

Fluff the brown rice with a fork before serving.

Instant Pot:

Rinse the brown rice thoroughly and add it to the Instant Pot.

Add the water or broth and salt.

Close the Instant Pot lid and set the pressure release valve to sealing.

Select the "Manual" or "Pressure Cook" function and set the timer for 22-25 minutes.

Once the cooking cycle is complete, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then quick release any remaining pressure.

Fluff the brown rice with a fork before serving.

Cooked brown rice can be used in a variety of dishes, including stir-fries, salads, soups, and grain bowls. It can also be used as a substitute for white rice in most recipes. Brown rice is a healthy and delicious grain that is easy to cook and versatile in the kitchen.
