How to Deactivate Facebook Profile, Page and Group - Complete Step by Step Tutorial

There are two main ways to take a break from Facebook: deactivating or deleting your account. Deactivating is temporary while deleting your account is permanent. Here's how to deactivate your Facebook account:

On Desktop:

  1. Go to your Facebook account and log in if you haven't already.
  2. Click the downward aarrow in the top-right corner of the Facebook homepage.
  3. Select Settings & Privacy and then Settings.
  4. In the left-hand menu, navigate to Your Facebook Information.
  5. Click on Deactivation and Deletion.
  6. Choose Deactivate account and follow the on-screen prompts. You'll be asked to choose a reason for deactivating and confirm your password.

On Mobile App:

  1. Open the Facebook app and log in to your account.
  2. Tap the menu button (three horizontal lines) on the bottom right corner (Android) or top right corner (iPhone).
  3. Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy and then Settings.
  4. Tap Account Ownership and Control and then Deactivation and Deletion.
  5. Select Deactivate account and follow the on-screen prompts. You'll be asked to choose a reason for deactivating and confirm your password.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Deactivating your account hides your profile and most activity from others. However, your information is still stored by Facebook.
  • You can reactivate your account at any time by logging back in to Facebook.
  • If you want to permanently delete your account, you'll need to choose the Delete Account option instead during the deactivation process. Be aware that this action is irreversible.

How to Deactivate Facebook Page:

Deactivating your Facebook page is a way to temporarily hide it from public view. This means people won't be able to see your page, its content, or search for it. However, you (and any page admins) can still access and manage the page while it's deactivated. Here's how to deactivate your Facebook page:

On Desktop:

  1. Go to your Facebook account and log in if you aren't already.
  2. Navigate to the Facebook page you want to deactivate. You can do this by clicking on your page name at the top of the screen if you manage multiple pages.
  3. Once on your page, click on Settings in the bottom left corner.
  4. In the left-hand menu, find General and click on it.
  5. Scroll down until you see Page Visibility.
  6. Click on Edit next to Visibility.
  7. Choose the option Deactivate Page. Facebook will give you a short preview of what will happen when you deactivate.
  8. Click Deactivate to confirm.

On Mobile App:

  1. Open the Facebook app and log in to your account.
  2. Tap on the menu button (three horizontal lines) on the bottom right corner (Android) or top right corner (iPhone).
  3. Scroll down and tap Pages. You should see a list of the pages you manage.
  4. Select the page you want to deactivate.
  5. Tap on Settings in the top right corner.
  6. Scroll down and tap on Access and Control.
  7. Under Deactivation and Deletion, tap Deactivate Page.
  8. Facebook will give you a short preview of what will happen when you deactivate.
  9. Tap Deactivate to confirm.

Remember:

  • You can reactivate your page at any time by following the same steps and selecting Reactivate Page instead.
  • Deactivating your page does not delete it. Your content and information are still stored by Facebook.
  • If you want to permanently delete your page, you cannot retrieve it later. Explore the option Delete Page instead during this process, but be aware it's a permanent action.

How to Deactivate Facebook Group:

Facebook doesn't actually allow you to directly deactivate a group in the traditional sense. There is a process to archive a group, which achieves a similar outcome of making the group inaccessible to the public. However, archived groups can still be accessed by members and admins. Here's how to archive a Facebook group:

On Desktop:

  1. Go to your Facebook account and log in if you aren't already.
  2. Navigate to the Facebook group you want to archive.
  3. Once on the group page, click on Settings below the cover photo.
  4. In the left-hand menu, find General and click on it.
  5. Scroll down until you see Group Visibility.
  6. Click on Edit next to Visibility.
  7. Here, you'll see the option to Archive Group. Facebook will explain what archiving entails.
  8. Click on Archive to confirm.

On Mobile App:

  1. Open the Facebook app and log in to your account.
  2. Tap on the menu button (three horizontal lines) on the bottom right corner (Android) or top right corner (iPhone).
  3. Scroll down and tap Groups. You should see a list of the groups you're a member of.
  4. Select the group you want to archive.
  5. Tap on More (three dots) in the top right corner.
  6. In the menu, tap on Edit Group.
  7. Tap on Group Settings.
  8. Scroll down and tap on Members.
  9. Under Group Visibility, tap on Edit.
  10. Here, you'll see the option to Archive Group. Facebook will explain what archiving entails.
  11. Tap on Archive to confirm.

Alternative: Deleting the Group

If you want to completely remove the group, you can't simply archive it. You'll need to take the following steps:

  1. Remove all members from the group until you're the only remaining member.
  2. Once you're the sole member, you can delete the group. This action is permanent.

Important Note:

  • Archived groups can be unarchived at any time, making them visible again.
  • Deleting a group is permanent. You cannot retrieve it or its content later.
  • Consider the option you truly desire: hide the group (archive) or permanently remove it (delete). Choose accordingly.
